Digestion
Although we chew the food a lot, it still doesn't get small enough to go across veins and get into the bloodstream, and then into the cells.
Chewing is called mechanical digestion.
The following process is chemical digestion: enzymes attack the pieces of chewed food and break down large molecules into smaller ones.
Proteins are broken down (by enzymes) into units called aminoacids. Those can be reassembled to form other types of proteins, proteins of the human body!
Carbohydrates are broken down into sugars, whichcan provide energy but not building blocks for an animal.
At the end of the digestion process, waste material is egested in the form of poo.
We eat to get energy and also to get raw materials to build and maintain the body.
